課程概述

本課程計劃藉由政治思想史的歷史縱深，來掌握當代政治所遭遇的困境。本課程將分三個部分，首先是古典政治哲學經典的回顧。其次是以近代歐洲哲學家對於主權、政府正當性、法治的討論為承接，如何批判性地繼承了古典的政治思維。最後，則轉向美國建國初期對於實踐政治原則的論辯與妥協，以此作為銜接理論與實踐間的橋樑。
This course is ultimately about the predicament of modern politics. It shall reflect on its theoretical basis, i.e. the history of political thought. The course is divided into three parts. We shall first briefly review classical political philosophy. Then we shall turn to modern European philosophers, in particular their discussion of sovereignty, legitimacy, and laws. Special attention will be devoted to their critique of classical political philosophers. Finally, we shall conclude with the Federalist-Anti-Federalist debate in the United States, a noteworthy example of how to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

The course aims to develop students’ ability in the study of, as well as critical thinking against the classics of political philosophy. In the meanwhile, students are expected to explore the possibility of closing the rift between political philosophy and political practice.
